An accelerator for impactful
innovation ideas

We’re supporting social enterprises and not-for-profits to bring innovative new ideas to life, with access to $160,000 of in-kind support.

Expressions of interest are now open to organisations with new ideas that create smarter and more human ways to care for those who need it most.

‘Care’ here is open to all forms of care—it might be aged care, mental health care, disability care, or other forms of care.

We’re looking to support early-stage ideas that;

  • Improve access to care services for those in need
  • Improve the experience of those receiving care
  • Increase the happiness and productivity of carers
  • Improve organisations that manage or deliver care
  • Increase incidence and quality of co-production of caregiving

Eligibility

Organisation Type
This program is open to any Australian based charity, not-for-profit, or social enterprise*.

Co-funding Commitment
We are asking for co-funding to assure a shared commitment. We ask for a 20% contribution for a total project cost of up to $200,000. As a maximum, we will provide $160,000 of in-kind services, and the successful applicant will provide $40,000.

Project Collaboration
The project will likely run over three to four months from July 2021. As a minimum, we ask for at least a single member of your team to be available for two days a week to support the project. We value genuine partnership, so we would welcome more involvement.

Evaluation criteria

We are seeking to make a positive impact; our evaluation is based on four criteria.

  • Your concept (25%)
What is the opportunity, concept or idea? What problem does it solve?
  • Impact potential (25%)
What is the potential scale of impact? How big a dent could we make?
  • Innovation potential (25%)
What makes this a great opportunity for innovation? What makes it exciting?
  • Your commitment (25%)
How have you come to develop your concept? What effort has been put in so far? What are your plans to support the idea in the future?
What services can be accessed through this program?

Successful applicants will have access to $160,000 worth of strategic design services.

Today will work in close partnership with a team of representatives from your organisation on a four-month project that will bring your idea to life.

Depending on the best way to tackle the opportunity area, we might;

  • Test and improve your idea with the people who might use it
  • Creating a brand and/or marketing strategy
  • Creating a business case and pitch materials to help with further funding
  • Designing and build a launch-ready pilot (this could be an app, a website, or a new service)
  • Mapping out how to take your idea beyond a pilot and make it sustainable

Why this program, and where to next?

We are a company that measures our success by the social and environmental impact we make in the world.

Over the years, we’ve supported many organisations through pro-bono contributions. So far, this has been ad-hoc, based on conversations and opportunities along the way.

We want to be more targeted in our efforts through our Daybreak program, providing substantial support for a chosen idea. Future rounds of the program will focus on different impact areas aligned with our impact goals.

This is our first attempt at running such a program, and we’d love to hear any feedback you have on how we might develop the program in the future. If you have any suggestions, reach out to daybreak@today.design.

*We use this definition for a Social Enterprise - a business that exists to deliver a measurable social, cultural or environmental impact. It derives most of its revenue from trading, and it reinvests a significant proportion of its profit in furthering its mission.
